Today at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai, Ryan Lochte got his second straight victory over Michael Phelps to assert a potential changing of the guard among the American contenders in the pool ahead of next year’s London Olympiad. Following up his 200m freestyle win over the 14-time Olympic gold medalist, Lochte edged out Phelps to the wall in the 200m individual medley and immediately turned back toward the clock.
Lochte earned gold... Read More

We used to take their dominance for granted. But after the events that unfolded in Shanghai on the opening day of swimming the 2011 FINA World Aquatics Championships, the four-year reign of the American men as the kings of the pool is undisputed no longer. After going undefeated in every relay they had contested since 2007 — at the Olympics, at worlds, in other international competitions and regardless the discipline or distance — the... Read More

The sports world is in another one of those moments in the year where everything begins to crunch together at once for fans in the United States. The NBA joined the NHL this week in starting its regular season. College football enters its stretch drive, while the NFL prepares for its second half of the season. Oh, and there’s that matter of a few more baseball games to be played in San Francisco and Arlington…
But that is just the tip... Read More

Wow… seems that the beer my wife bought me last night really did a number on me. As I sat in front of the computer on Wednesday, digesting the 22 ounces of Bourbon County Brand Stout by Goose Island Brewery (13.0% alcohol by volume) and trying to finish up stage recaps from the Vuelta and musings from the U.S. Open and yes, this column as well, I instead felt my eyelids falling, falling, falling… Read More

It’s funny how we can procrastinate sometimes despite having everything laid out in front of us. I started this column back on Saturday, diligently starting the process of building the news and notes of the week as I always do. The skeleton inputted online, I then went about my daily writing and slowly fleshed out the article from there. But with just this introduction and the conclusion left to write, I tabled the piece and went about my day... Read More
