With the conclusion of Wednesday’s games, the UEFA Champions League is officially halfway through its group stage. When the groups were first announced, I made my predictions as to who would be advancing on to the knockout phase of the competition. Ranking every group 1-4, I pretty much laid it all out there on the line and made my best judgments as to how the world’s preeminent club tournament would play out this season.
So perhaps now... Read More

By the time this goes up on the site, I’ll be somewhere en route to California to the Bioneers conference in San Rafael. The coffee company my wife’s family owns and operates needed a few extra bodies to man their trio of locations at the event, and so I was conscripted for active duty. It’s funny to think, living as relatively close as I do, but this will be the first time that I will have given northern California more than a... Read More

I wasn’t planning on having to write this piece, and I wasn’t planning on having to bring this week’s column to you late. What you’ll read deeper into this week’s edition is the direction I’d hoped to go, discussing hour tournaments like the Olympic hockey spectacle and the Davis Cup and the Ryder Cup are essential buttresses for the professional game. I’d been captivated by a book I had picked up at... Read More

What makes us enjoy what we enjoy; how do our spectating proclivities develop, and why do we take interest in some events and not in others? It’s one of those things that I keep rolling over again and again in my brain as I find myself overwhelmed at times with the sheer number of events that seem to captivate me and pull my focus in every possible direction. We’re at the intersection of summer and winter, the traditional autumn... Read More

Wow… seems that the beer my wife bought me last night really did a number on me. As I sat in front of the computer on Wednesday, digesting the 22 ounces of Bourbon County Brand Stout by Goose Island Brewery (13.0% alcohol by volume) and trying to finish up stage recaps from the Vuelta and musings from the U.S. Open and yes, this column as well, I instead felt my eyelids falling, falling, falling… Read More
