For sports fans in the United States — who endured the NFL work stoppage over the summer, and are currently watching and waiting as the NBA and its players work toward a stalemate that could look suspiciously like the NHL’s season-long shutdown in 2004-05 — labor situations have taken on a curious pattern in recent years. It isn’t the players, the labor of this situation, which initiates a strike; instead, it is management,... Read More

Wednesday morning really left me with a lot of time to think, and boy was there plenty to think about. I was up before 4:00 am, waking up to drive my wife to the airport for a week away on business. (Sweetheart that she was, having been up awake all night unable to sleep, she had a cup of coffee in hand for me as soon as I walked in the kitchen.) As I drove home in the pre-dawn fog of a cool autumnal morning, her plane turned northward for the short... Read More

With the conclusion of Wednesday’s games, the UEFA Champions League is officially halfway through its group stage. When the groups were first announced, I made my predictions as to who would be advancing on to the knockout phase of the competition. Ranking every group 1-4, I pretty much laid it all out there on the line and made my best judgments as to how the world’s preeminent club tournament would play out this season.
So perhaps now... Read More

By the time this goes up on the site, I’ll be somewhere en route to California to the Bioneers conference in San Rafael. The coffee company my wife’s family owns and operates needed a few extra bodies to man their trio of locations at the event, and so I was conscripted for active duty. It’s funny to think, living as relatively close as I do, but this will be the first time that I will have given northern California more than a... Read More

Just as one continent wraps up their tournament of champions, another gets theirs ready to start anew. On the heels of Internacional’s Copa Libertadores victory over Chivas last week, Italy’s Internazionale gears up for its Champions League title defense after their defeat of Bayern Munich in the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid last May. Inter has a lot easier path back to the knockout stage than their cross-town Milanese rival, for... Read More
